M50 - Structure S13- Project Update (8th Dec 2009)

AMSE were appointed for the construction of the skewed steel bridge at the M50 to N3 junction. This bridge structure S13 consists of approximately 500 tonnes of 2 complex box section steelwork bridges. This bridge was designed by hewson consulting engineers ltd for the M50Concession. Fabrication commenced in October 2009 with the first section erected on the 20th November 2009. Erection of the bridge consists of 3 night road closures of the M50 with 4 major lifts. On the 20th of November Lifts 1 and 2 where erected over the M50 from the East Abutment to the median piers. On the 27th of November Lifts 3 was erected, completing northern span of the structure from the West Abutment over the M50 the median. The final lift was erected on the 4th of December, completing the southern span of the bridge from the West Abutment to the median. In total over 500 tonnes of steel was erected in 3 nights between the hours of 11pm to 6am so as to minimize any disruption to traffic on the M50. The largest lift was 63m long and weighed 160tonnes which was transported down the M50 from a temporary assembly yard at the old M50 toll plaza site.
